Illinois is known for producing some of the best guards in the Nation. Current NBA guards from Illinois include Jalen Brunson, Fred VanVleet, Max Strus, Ayo Dosunmu, Jevon Carter, and soon to be Jeremiah Fears. With a rich history of producing elite talent, it is easy to overlook a prospect especially on the high school level within Illinois. Let’s not overstate anything here but the point I am getting to is the Most Overlooked players in Illinois could go elsewhere like Iowa, Michigan, Kentucky and be very sought after.
Cole DuBois who only stands at about 5’11, possibly closing in on 6-feet is a name many people throughout the State have kept on hush for pretty much the entirety of his high school career. DuBois is only a sophomore and has already embarked on his 1,000-point milestone. We see players like this all the time who are very elite at scoring the ball and due to their size and other things out of their control end up playing at the Division II and NAIA level before transferring to play Division I.
DuBois is so underappreciated; he helped lead his school East Peoria to a 23-9 record. East’s best record since the 90’s, DuBois also finished as Mid-Illini All Conference First Team. Areas in Cole’s game he must improve on is simply playing with strength and aggression. DuBois is a finesse player; he knows how to make a move and score with style, but he must adapt to playing under pressure for an extended period of time and making strong plays with contact.
With Cole athleticism isn’t much of a concern but it can be improved on. The reason why athleticism is not much of a concern is because the type of player he is. Players in today’s game like Luca Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Teddy Allen all struggle with being athletic but they are so good the game has adjusted to their style of play. With Cole DuBois he is so good of a scorer and at getting his buckets, most players have to adjust to his style of play.
